  • Description: Balaji or Venkateshwara is the presiding deity at Tirumala and a form of Vishnu and Padmavathi, or Alamelu, a form of Lakshmi, is his devoted consort who resides in Tiruchanoor. The black stone idols of Padmavathi and Balaji in this composition are depicted standing side by side within an elaborate bicusped prabhavali (arch). Both Padmavathi and Venkateshwara are beautifully bedecked with jewellery and floral garlands She hold lotus blooms in her upper hands and her lower hands are in abhaya (protection) and varada (blessing) mudras. He wears the white karpura namam (camphor Vaishnavite symbol) on his forehead and two of his hands, which are behind are bare, but have the shankhu (conch) and chakram (discus) superimposed on them. The hands in the front are in varada and katyavilambita (indicating protection to his devotees) mudra. The opulent Balaji and Padmavathy with the rich adornments and impressive prabhavali an innate grandeur to this Tanjore painting.
