Description: Meenakshi Sudareshwarar Kalyanam or Thirukalyanam is celebrated as the Chitirai festival at the Madurai Meenakshi temple every year. This composition depicts the kanyadaanam of Meenakshi, a Pandya princess and incarnation of Parvati, by Vishnu to Sundareshwarar, an incarnation of Siva. Meenakshi is usually depicted as green skinned, symbolising fertility.
The divine wedding is attended by gods who stand on either side and is conducted by learned sages, including Brahma, who are seated below. The striking colors, intricately embossed gold foil and bright semiprecious stones make this a truly striking composition.
