  • Material: Wood
  • Description: Vitobha, also known as Vitthala or Panduranga, is an avatar of Vishnu, worshipped in Pandharpur, an important Vaishnavite shrine in Maharashtra. In this Tanjore version, young Vitobha is seen in his classical pose, standing with his hands on his hips. This beautifully adorned Vitobha is framed by an intricately worked archway and platform. He is dressed in gilded lower garment, instead of his usual yellow one, adorned with jewels from head to toe and wears a gentle smile. He is flanked by Rukmini and Satyabhama, both playing musical instruments, presumably to accompany Krishna's flute. The trios is framed within an exquisite arched mandapam. Below them are a pair of baby Krishnas crawling towards bowls of butter. The rich ornamentation with gold foil and bright semiprecious stones make this a striking composition in the classical Tanjore painting style.
